East Meets South: living room decor

Renovated Ranch Home Tour

I love to read articles or blog posts about renovated homes, especially an older home that has been renovated with a fresh look. This home is currently one of my favorites because they perfectly mix traditional furniture with contemporary pieces so that the decor doesn't look outdated. Sometimes when you love vintage or traditional furniture as much as we do, it's hard to figure out how to mix in modern or trendy pieces to make it look not so granny.

Living Room Update: Ferns in the Fireplace

benjamin moore edgecomb gray 6:30 AM

If you read my post here, you know that I am so excited to update our living room from this dark wood paneled dungeon into a more neutral and cozy space. We painted the walls in Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray, and we couldn't be happier about the results. I know it's called "gray" but honestly it is more beige than gray. It may be the lighting in our room because I have read online that some people feel that it looks more gray to them. The red brick fireplace was painted in white so the contrast is just what I was looking for.

Excuse the empty mantle - I'm searching for the perfect piece of art to put there. It may take time considering I may be the most indecisive person on this planet. Anyway, we knew that this wood fireplace was never going to get used because we don't want to mess with it and honestly in N.C., it just doesn't get that cold. Don't get me wrong though, I love a fireplace but just prefer a gas one.

I've been researching on what I can do with my fireplace and found the perfect solution - ferns! I've thought about candles, faux firewood, etc, etc, but I just love the look of ferns there. Of course I dream about having a fiddle leaf fig tree but unless my black thumb decides to turn green overnight, that just isn't happening anytime soon.

My husband brought 2 ferns for me. Here is to hoping I keep them alive. He has the green thumb in our relationship so I'll just stay far away from them.

We also purchased 2 accent chairs and I have my eyes on some stool benches. Hopefully the room will start feeling full soon! Stay tuned for more -- or you can follow along on my instagram!

Leather Sofas

decorating around a leather sofa 6:00 AM

Okay, so call me crazy, but I have, all of a sudden, been really attracted to leather sofas. My husband once again wins his case about leather sofas, I guess! I think I always thought they looked cheap and didn't fit with my "style" but I have changed my mind on that (I know, shocking). I have always loved white or ivory upholstered sofas. White everything. Recently my parents purchased a gorgeous ivory leather sofa and I was slightly jealous. Am I crazy or is this just the practial, sensible, and grown up decision that I will have to make? Living with our 70 lb fur ball has changed my outlook on so many decor related things, I can only imagine what will happen when I have kiddos in the future.

This room pretty much has me convinced that it will work with my Chinoiserie, granny style.

I think this modern sofa works perfectly with Chinoiserie print pillows!

I also love the masculinity of a dark sofa. It can balance out my overly feminine style.

Crushing on Chintz

Chinoiserie 6:00 AM

I love chintz. I know this isn't for everyone but I have always loved floral prints of any color. If I didn't have a husband, I would totally rock a chintz couch (or chintz everything, really) in my house. I definitely think that it would be hard to find a man who would appreciate a good chintz couch. Maybe I could get by with an arm chair or two.

Coffee Table Envy

I love a good styled coffee table. When I see a coffee table styled like the one above, I wonder if they have dogs. Or kids. In my household, with a 70 lb goldendoodle, who is nosey and curious about everything around him, I could never imagine having a stylish table like that. We literally have nothing on ours now. I have serious coffee table envy when I see these on blogs and websites.
